Stunning Vintage Alvarez Yairi DY87 Acoustic Double Neck 12/6 String Guitar.
This guitar was only made from roughly 1979 to 1982 and only about 100 made in total.
Serial #35274. Made in Japan and the label is signed by Kazuo Yairi.
This example is probably (by far) the cleanest you will find and in the best shape as well. Most of these have had issues over the years, probably due to not be taken care of and stored properly. This one is an exception.
It comes as pictured with the original case.
Condition is excellent, especially for a guitar of this, let along a double neck. There is some slight discoloration on the headstock of the 12-string (see pics) probably from a polish that wasn’t removed thoroughly or something like that. A few very light surface dings here and there and that is pretty much it. The pics tell the story; this guitar is incredibly clean for 40+ years old.
BOTH necks play very well and the sound is truly enormous. I cannot say enough about the way this guitar sounds. I have played many double necks over the years and hands down, nothing even comes close to sounding like this one. Plus it is comfortable to play due to the smaller, more compact body style. (for a doubleneck, of course!)
This guitar has been completely gone over by my luthier, Ron at Flathead Guitarworks in Kalispell MT. He has stabilized the bridge (it is rock solid on both sides) as well as polished/crowned the frets and adjust the action on both necks. This guitar is stellar from a playability standpoint
It also has an under the saddle pickup on each side, 6-string and 12-string. There is a end-pin 1/4″ jack and while I have not pulled it and examined it completely, my guess is that it is a stereo jack so that you can run to a preamp for each neck:) Very cool especially for its day.
